Dr. Sandra Boysen Sluberski resides in Rush, NY, a town in the Rochester metropolitan area. Her book is titled Taking Myths to the Mat: Integrating Yoga Mythology into Your Asana Teaching.

I first met Jeffrey on the third floor of the Alano Club (a beautiful old Pabst mansion converted into a recovery club) on Prospect Avenue in Milwaukee. We were doing Kirtan there for the recovery community. He came up afterward, asking questions that only a musician would ask. I asked him if he played an instrument. He said, “a little bit of guitar.” So, the next time we were in Milwaukee, I asked if he’d audition for the band. He came (same third floor), him, his guitar, a small amp, and his AA sponsor.

What happened next can only be described as a magician with a guitar. I was embarrassed that I had “auditioned” him. He was clearly a pro. He played a few gigs with us when we were in Milwaukee, and he and I have been friends ever since.

In this podcast, Jeffrey shares his journey from a street junkie living in his car to a business owner at Mindful Artistry, ironically now finishing up a painting job at the Conservatory of Music in Milwaukee.

And even more - Jeffrey is in three bluegrass bands in Milwaukee and has released over a dozen singles that you can find here on Apple Music or Spotify.

If you live around the Milwaukee, Wisconsin area, you can find him every Wednesday at Nashville North. It’s called the Humpday Hoedown with Dusty’s Struggle Band. Also, the first Thursday at Patti’s Powerplant with the Stallis Cowboys.

Jeffrey’s story is an amazing testament that some do recover. I am grateful for my friendship with Jeffrey and for sharing both our passion for music and our passion for recovery from addiction.

Linda Warner Artist

Linda and I crossed paths during the challenging times of COVID. It was a dark period for me, marked by significant endings. I sold my gig car, signifying the end of 20 years of on-the-road music. Also, I parted ways with my bandmate as we had drifted apart, losing our shared sense of purpose. Amidst these changes, I found myself struggling to define my identity as an artist and musician.

It was during this period of darkness that two opportunities emerged almost simultaneously. First, I met David Schoepke, an exceptional drummer from Hartland, Wisconsin. Additionally, I came across Linda Warner’s social media posts, which chronicle her artistic journey. The convergence of these two individuals in my life lifted me out of my funk and set me on a new artistic path. David and I decided to collaborate on a yoga album, with Linda providing the artwork. In the realm of music marketing, there’s a common saying: “They see you before they hear you.” Linda’s artwork served as a beacon, offering insight into the music and helping to light my path through the darkness. Following a single phone call during the challenges of COVID, our collaborative journey began. David and I focused on creating the music, while Linda crafted the artwork to complement the overall vibe.

That was our path, and Linda and I still work together, but with the launch of the podcast, Th3 R3vibal, we can now delve deeper into Linda’s artistic journey.

The Artist’s Pathway

Let’s begin with Linda’s career journey. She spent most of her career in finance as a securities broker and then transitioned into a corporate executive strategic role, both of which were laden with long hours and much stress. The combined pressures of her job and chronic health issues prompted Linda to reassess her path. She expressed the need to find a calming outlet for herself. This led her to discover yoga and meditation, which indeed provided her with the peaceful balance she sought. However, she also felt the urge to explore her creative side. Recalling a break she had in her twenties while relocating for her job, Linda was inspired to paint an entire ceramic Christmas village to pass the time. She cherished every moment, especially experimenting with varying paint viscosities to achieve different textures and outcomes. Painting not only allowed her to express her creativity but also transported her into a meditative state.

As a result, Linda started doing watercolor paintings. However, the medium of watercolor really didn’t resonate with her. Watercolor, for her, didn’t offer the depth and texture that she desired. Because of this, she put the art idea on the shelf for almost a decade.

An Artist Reignited

One evening, while dining with a painter friend, Linda’s interest in art was reignited. It’s worth noting that her mother was also an artist—a talented oil painter and a skilled sketcher. However, her mother had 5 children to care for, and she found time was limited to devote to her art. Linda was motivated by her friend’s passion for painting and inspired by her mother’s talent, which encouraged her to pick up her brushes once more.

However, no longer interested in creating watercolor landscapes, she was unsure of what type of painting she wanted to pursue. This uncertainty led her down a rabbit hole on YouTube, where she discovered the technique of paint pouring. While she found it amusing, enjoyable, and messy, it didn’t fully capture her interest.

A journey to Asheville, NC, turned things around for Linda. As she stepped into Jonas Gerard’s studio and laid eyes on his big, bold abstract pieces, something stirred deep inside her.

She felt a fire in her, knowing that this was the kind of art she wanted to create. Jonas was playful in his work, using high-quality acrylic paints and guiding his work with the rhythmic power of music. From Jonas’ influence, Linda learned to dance her paintings into existence.

She has her studio set up so she’s always on the move. She calls her creative routine her own form of yoga. With her art chair and table both on wheels, she glides from spot to spot in her studio, often juggling multiple pieces at once.

The Edge of Reality

The War of Art

Steven Pressfield, in “The War of Art,” delves into the concept of resistance in the realm of art creation. Linda acknowledges that while acquiring new skills will propel her art forward, it also stirs up the kind of resistance Pressfield touches on, triggering her inner critic. The resistance to creativity can be heightened when she considers sharing her work with others, which exposes a raw vulnerability that often steers her towards procrastination. To combat this, Linda has reframed her studio as a space for play, experimentation, and exploration. She emphasizes that embracing our true artistic selves, quirks and all, without judgment is important.

Be Weird

What makes art ‘good’ or ‘bad’? Linda believes that the answer lies within each individual, as art is subjective. What resonates with one person may not appeal to another. Linda emphasizes the importance of creating and then letting go – simply answering the call to create as often as possible. However, she also acknowledges that creativity doesn’t flow every day. There are times when it’s necessary to step back and take a break.

Side Eye

Linda sees creativity as sacred, a realm where she can truly be herself. While in her daily life she deals with anxiety and a drive for perfection, inside her studio, she allows herself to make mistakes and learn without being too hard on herself. She’s noticed that the way she is in her studio spills over into her everyday life, helping her blend both parts of who she is. Getting creative helps her bring together different pieces of herself, and through making art, Linda has found “a new cool side of herself” that she doesn’t often allow herself to experience.

Lost Fragments

Color, depth, and texture are at the heart of Linda’s artistic language. She creates tactile, dimensional surfaces that invite viewers to look beyond the flat plane and experience the emotional and energetic resonance within each layer.

Driven by curiosity, Linda continually experiments with new methods of making marks—from traditional brushes to kitchen tools—to expand the expressive possibilities of her art. Her work reflects an ongoing journey of discovery, storytelling, and the profound satisfaction of watching a painting reveal itself over time.

Certainly, Linda’s artistic journey continues, breaking down internal barriers to create beauty for us.

I am so happy that Linda and I crossed paths in 2020. I am grateful and honored to have Linda’s work grace my music. This collaboration has been a Godsend, a light that continues to shine…more music and more art to come!
